Couple of weeks ago I was at the libary and I came across a photo book. Merja Salo, Fashion Immortalizers (sorry about the word, I made it up) The History of finnish fashion photography and I was blown away!
At first I have to admit I’ve been arrogant. Untill now I thought nothing of the finnish fashion photoscene and the history of it. Figured that the old guys are just complaining about the digital revolution because it took away their easy paycheck.
One reason I thought nothing of it was because I did not know it excisted! How dumb of me. At this point I have to credit J Vatanen for sharing the insights of the past with us at kameraukku.com. Some funny details here and there. I wish to hear so much more. The websized pics online do not do him justice thou.
Even if the clothes are out dated in many case, the pictures in the book still stand tall! Black and white, color, the use of light and composition. Some of the pictures just blew me away. What facinated me the most was the use of light. It was subtle and yet very modern. It was like looking through the best of the Strobist flickr group. And we concider our self the lighting geeks. We are owned!
I think I have to buy the book eventualy, but don’t have the cash for it. You should defenedly check the book out, if you are in to fashion photos.
A article about the book in Helsingin Sanomat

Being as I am a poor man I don’t have a loose money to invest in photography. Thus I have to find a ways to go around some problems because I just can’t walk in to a camera store and buy all the gear I can think of.
Luckily – as we all have learned from the man him self the great great D.H. – things don’t always have to be damn expensive.
Worst item I ever bought was a small soft box for 60e (Ought to sell it thou.) The best peace of gear I’ve bought is a white old bed sheet for 2e! (Sure the ezy is still my #1 peace of equipmet but it could have bought 65 of those bed sheets with the same money.)
1. the bed sheet, aka the silk

2. the snoot . This just one of many I’ve “build”. I attend to forget these at the location on every shoot thus I have to make new ones..

3. the straw grid.. everyone has these but I rarely use them
