70 years apart

I rarely share anything personal on the blog but this time I’ll make an exception.

I am not one those ‘patriotic’ men who weae Lion coat of arms in their neck or own one of those “Thank you 1939-1945 shirts.”  I simply they are tacky.

My brother swore his oath of allegiance on Thursday in Hamina in the Church of Marian. (In Finland the service is compulsory)  My grandfather swore his oath also in the same place exactly seventy years ago. In the middle of February 1942.

My brother came home for a three day vacation shooting pool. Grandfather was headed to the front.

Most of  the time during ceremony I watched at my grandfather and tried to think of the emotions he went through that day 70 years ago and now watching his grandson going through the same thing in the same place. It must have revoked memories and it was emotional but I would be lying to claim that I had even the slightst idea of his thoughts.

It must have a been a big deal because he asked me to take the picture of him and my brother.

The second image from our set done few weeks back.

The black and white image below is done in a very odd way and somehow reminds me of Walter Iooss’s shots. (I know I know its not even close to those but it still reminds me of them some how. Ought to kick in some grain and so on..)

I am in the last inch on one bigger shoot. I will not show the images but the story behind it might be worth to write down.

Simple and elegant.

Camilla had totally free hands to do what ever she wanted to do. We talked about this muted, pastel kinda look and it worked out pretty well.

Edit: Uploaded the b/w pic also – although the make up has such a cool color to it, but some how it still works..

Annual Kids Shoot!

I am not much of a children photographer. In fact I’ve been saying “no” for years when anyone asked me to take pics of their kids.

There is one exception that starts to have a tradition to it. Family Leino and their four daughters Nea, Susanna, Tiina and Nella. I visit them now and then but once a year I bring the camera with me to shoot some portraits.

Its different and simply fun! I was taking picture of Nea while Tiina was climbing my on my back and Nella wanted to sit on my lap. In the middle of all I manage to shoot somehting worth showing.

Except the youngest one all of the kids have their own cameras. Nea the oldest is actually a nature photographer who’s known to wake up at 4am to go to the swamp with her dad and liked it!  Tiina (the bottom one in the pic below) is fascinated with lights and usually helps me out when setting up. And its not that she just takes a flash and runs with it to scare off others, she really helps!  No doubt she will grow up to be a portrait photographer. Of Susanna and and Nella I am not quite sure yet. But I think Susanna has this quiet artistic side to her and could go on to produce fine art photos. Nella has to first learn not to eat the camera but she’ll has time.
